Dad Lunch Note #607

FRIDAY, JANUARY 29, 2021

My author friend Jon Acuff - at least, I think we’re friends - started a new podcast about setting and accomplishing goals. At the beginning of each year, I set a handful of goals for things I want to accomplish during the following 365 days. Like everyone else, 2020 was great until March and then I threw everything out the window.

I’m my harshest critic. I don’t grade myself on a curve or give myself credit for putting in the work even when I didn’t reach the goal I initially wanted. But, Jon brought up a good point: what if we graded ourselves on a curve? 2020 sucked. 2021 may continue that trend.

If you cheer for someone crawling across the finish line at a marathon, then why can’t you go easy on yourself when you’re walking in the direction you wanted to go?
